Soon after the alert was sent we received a reply form the facilities manager saying that they were unsure what equipment was on this supply or how it was controlled. This is common for many facilities managers as usually they inherit a site that has poor documentation regarding electricity infrastructure.
We organised a site visit to the school and, using information gathered from the visit, generated a Single Line Diagram (SLD) of the site to help identify problematic equipment.
The facilities manager was able to determine that the plantroom of the Library had been running 24/7 because when he was on leave a staff member had adjusted the schedules of the plantroom without his knowledge. The plantroom had been running 24/7 for approximately 6 weeks and would have continued running indefinitely had this issue not been identified and diagnosed with EnergyLink.
The cost of running the plantroom during the night and during weekends added approximately $15,000 per annum to the site’s annual electricity spend, or approximately 10% of the site’s annual electricity costs.
